Who are we?

We are a Massage Therapy and Yoga Instruction business in Uptown, Chicago near Sunnyside Ave and Sheridan Ave.  

Please note that we follow a 24 hour cancellation policy. This means, that if you wish to reschedule or cancel your appointment, please contact us with a minimum of 24 hours notice. A same day cancellation will incur a 50% cancellation fee and a no call, no show will incur a 100% cancellation fee.

Thai Massage

This form of massage is done on a padded mat on the floor, performed over clothing, and incorporates yogic stretching, compressions, breathing techniques, traction, and trigger point therapy. We also incorporate burning Nag Champa incense when appropriate.

A hour session where we guide you through a personalized yoga flow, working your areas of focus. We will also provide you with lots of physical adjustments, guiding you more accurately into the postures.

ONLINE PRIVATE YOGA LESSON

A hour session where we guide you through a personalized yoga flow, working your areas of focus. We will also provide you with lots of verbal adjustments, guiding you more accurately into the postures. This is done via Zoom, Skype, or Facebook Messenger, depending on what is best for the client.

Vinyasa Yoga Triangle Pose Image

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa is the act of linking one breath to one movement. A moving mediation. As such, in these classes, we will focus a lot on breathing and moving through the poses in a linking flow.

Optional Props: Yoga Blocks (1-2) and Strap.

Yoga sculpt Image

Yoga Sculpt

Yoga Sculpt is a strengthening Vinyasa style yoga class that incorporates optional hand weights, bodyweight squats, and cardio bursts. The weights provide resistance for muscle strengthening and the cardio bursts elevate the heart rate during this high-intensity yoga practice. While the weights are usually used, they are not required. You will still get quite the workout without them.

Props: Optional Light weights (recommended at least 3lb, 5lb, 8lb, and 10lb).

Optional Props: Yoga Blocks and strap.

Yin Yoga Seated Forward Fold Image

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with asanas (postures) that are held for longer periods of time than in other styles. This allows the tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue to stretch in ways that faster paced yoga does not. These postures are bolstered with blocks, pillows, blankets, and/or straps to make them more accessible.

Props: Yoga Blocks (2-4).

Optional Props: Blanket/Towel and pillows.

Restorative Yoga

Similar to Yin Yoga, these postures are held for longer periods, but in this case, the muscles are in rest, not stretch. This is to restore and rejuvenate the body in a way that many of us don’t allow normally. This is bolstered with pillows and blankets.

Props: Pillows (3-6) and blanket/towel.

A highly skilled professional, James is a passionate and experienced massage therapist and yoga instructor.

James studied massage therapy at Associates for Integrative Health in Bloomington, IN, graduating in August 2010. After graduating from AIH, he took up a job with Bright Chiropractic as a Massage Therapist for 6 months. In May 2011, he moved to Chicago to work for Massage Envy in Lincoln Park.

During college, James took two semesters of hatha yoga at Indiana University prior to attending AIH. After moving to Chicago, he tried a few different styles of yoga including Hatha, Bikram, and Vinyasa. After attending some classes at Corepower Yoga, he decided to do the Power Yoga Teacher Training in February 2014, graduating in April 2014.

James started Cummings Wellness in it's current incarnation in January 2014.
